The Australian Institute has laid bare the “astronomical costs” for medicines that Australians could face if pharmaceutical companies in the US are successful in “watering down” the PBS.
By comparing the Australian price (the amount consumers pay under the PBS) and the recommended retail price in the US for 11 commonly prescribed medications, the Australian Institute has shone a light on how the scheme helps keeps the prices Australians pay for medicine low – as the US pharmaceutical industry lobbies the US government to recognise the PBS as a non-trade barrier.
