Ethics of pharma profits debated

Not subsidising GLP-1 medicines for weight loss increases inequity for disadvantaged groups, an Australian ethics symposium was told. 

“We can get GLP-1s for obesity with heart disease or diabetes with subsidisation on the PBS,” said Professor Ian Kerridge, Professor of Bioethics and Medicine at the University of Sydney, co-hosting the Australian Ethical Health Alliance (AEHA) 2026 Symposium. “But if you want it for just weight loss ... then you pay for it yourself.
