Roche muscles up with $3.2B weight loss play

Roche has agreed to pay up to US$2.3 billion (A$3.2 billion) for a phase 1 weight loss drug with the potential to preserve muscle mass.

The Swiss giant’s Genentech unit will pay US$190 million up front, with the remainder in potential development, regulatory and commercial milestone payments, for the UCN2 (urocortin-2) analog HM17321, from South Korean biopharma Hanmi Pharm.

UCN2 is a naturally occurring signalling protein that enhances cardiac function during heart failure. It plays a role in regulating metabolism and reducing muscle atrophy.
