Billions lost in 2024 trial flops

Pharmas lost billions of dollars last year when candidates fell over at the last hurdle. It's a necessary risk to find the drugs that can successfully treat diseases that afflict humanity, but is always disappointing.

While the failure of recently acquired drugs is the most obvious and the easiest to quantify, treatments developed in-house can also leave big holes in a pharma's pipeline and finances, as a list drawn up by US publication Fierce Pharma demonstrates.
