Tobacco gets smoked by obesity

Living with overweight or obesity is now the leading risk factor contributing to disease burden in Australia, after overtaking tobacco smoking in 2024.

The switch is due to a substantial fall of 41 per cent in the age-standardised burden of tobacco since 2003, although with the caveat that nicotine vaping is not included in the figure. In contrast, the burden due to overweight or obesity has been relatively stable, and in 2024 was six per cent lower than in 2023.
