Govt invests in spider venom drug

The Albanese Government is hoping Funnel-web spiders could soon be protecting people from heart attacks instead of causing them, if new trials to develop the world's first-ever drugs for heart attack and heart transplantation go well.

A total of $17.86 million over five years will fund clinical trials of a peptide inspired by a molecule discovered in Australian funnel-web spider venom, which protects the heart during a heart attack and improves donor heart viability.
