An Australian-first report has revealed that Geographic atrophy (GA) - an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration which is a leading cause of vision loss - costs the economy $1.8 billion a year but every dollar spent preserving the sight of patients, would return more than double the value in benefits to society.
More than 75,000 Australians have GA which results in progressive vision-loss and legal blindness that eventually deprives people of their central vision and ability to read, drive, see faces and maintain their independence.
