The hidden $1.2B cost of two diseases

Two rare autoimmune diseases are costing Australians and the health system $1.2 billion every year, a new argenx backed report shows, amid delays in access to innovative treatments.

Commissioned by Patients Australia and prepared by HTA Analysts with the support of an unrestricted grant from argenx, the Value of Medicines Report 2026 was launched at Parliament House today.

It found that Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) carries an estimated $542.4 million total annual burden affecting around 3,590 Australians, while generalised Myasthenia Gravis (gMG) carries an estimated $656.3 million total annual burden affecting around 2,660 Australians.
