Australia's first homegrown mRNA Covid vaccine will finally enter human clinical trials in November, thanks to researchers from Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS) that developed three candidates within four weeks at the beginning of the pandemic.
While the team struggled to secure funding early on, Monash project leader, Professor Colin Pouton explained, "the initial group of three mRNA candidates we had were investigated in 2020 and this led us to focus on one class of candidate vaccine."
